University of Lynchburg physics professor Dr. John Eric Goff continues to serve as a frequent guest on Playing with Science, a StarTalk Radio podcast about the science of sports.
This week, the show published a recently recorded session in which Dr. Goff explained the physics necessary for a quarterback to throw a successful Hail Mary Pass — a long forward pass with unlikely success. Hosts Gary O’Reilly and Chuck Nice talked with Kordell Stewart, the quarterback who threw the “Miracle at Michigan” Hail Mary pass in 1994, before turning to Dr. Goff for an analysis of the science behind the pass. They examined two more stunning, game-winning passes before talking about the physics at play in a Texas high-schooler’s supposed ability to throw catch his own 40-yard pass.

This weekend, Dr. Goff will record a session of Cosmic Queries, in which the Playing with Science hosts will present him with listeners’ questions about the physics of soccer. That show will be available next week.
Dr. Goff, a noted expert on sports physics, also recently explained what science reveals about a deep football pass for the website ArrowheadOne.
