Accreditation

Accreditation Quick Facts

The program, which is approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), leads to a bachelor of science degree and qualifies students who wish to become registered nurses to take the National Council Licensing Examination.

At the October 3, 2003 Board meeting, the following final actions were taken by the CCNE Board of Commissioners:

  • Forty-four baccalaureate programs in the United States received accreditation.
  • An additional three baccalaureate programs' reports were accepted, indicating that those programs now meet or continue to meet all CCNE accreditation standards.
  • Of the forty-four baccalaureate programs receiving accreditation, Lynchburg College was the only one from Virginia that was granted accreditation.
  • Of the forty-four baccalaureate programs receiving accreditation, twenty-six higher education institutions, including Lynchburg College, had their programs accredited for a period of ten years (through December 31, 2013). The remaining eighteen programs were only accredited for a period of five years (through December 31, 2008).
  • Officially recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a national accreditation agency, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) is an autonomous accrediting agency contributing to the improvement of the public's health. CCNE ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate and graduate education programs preparing effective nurses.
  • CCNE serves the public interest by assessing and identifying programs that engage in effective educational practices. As a voluntary, self-regulatory process, CCNE accreditation supports and encourages continuing self-assessment by nursing education programs and the continuing growth and improvement of collegiate professional education.
