For immediate release – 6/22/2007 - #369 Lynchburg’s Caroline Cubbage Named State SB Player of the Year Four Hornets Honored
EMORY, VA - The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) recently selected Lynchburg College outfielder Caroline Cubbage (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) as the Virginia State College Division Player of the Year for the second-straight season. Meanwhile, Donnie Fulk of Bridgewater College was named the VaSID Coach of the Year and Roanoke College’s Kelsey Ruitenberg was named VaSID Rookie of the Year among the college division (Divisions II and III).
Cubbage, fresh off earning first-team All-American honors, also was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007. She batted .488 this season with 15 home runs, 56 RBI and a .959 slugging and .654 on-base percentages. Cubbage helped to lead Lynchburg to the ODAC Tournament Title and a berth in the NCAA Playoffs in which Lynchburg made the final 16. She shattered school records in home runs, RBI, walks, slugging percentage and games played.
Junior Elizabeth Perkins (Kents Store, VA/Fluvanna Country) joined Cubbage on the all-state first team as a utility player. A second-team All-ODAC and all-region honoree, Perkins hit .382 and was second on the team with eight home runs and 51 RBI. Third baseman Morgan Austin (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) and center fielder Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Johnathan Law) each made the state’s second-team squad. Austin hit .319 with 11 extra-base hits, while Allsop was second on the squad with a .390 batting average and 42 runs scored.
