One of the many projects I am currently studying is the involvement of faith-based groups in disaster response activities after Hurricane Katrina. In collaboration with the Disaster Research Center at the University of Delaware, a student and I were involved in collecting initial data concerning (1) the narrative and theological understandings of social reality that attend to the design and execution of the varied disaster response activities of churches/faith-based organizations, and (2) how these activities are carried out in relation to the efforts of other faith-based organizations. In other words, do some organizations serve as gatekeepers to other faith-based groups, regulating or limiting the involvement of other organizations that are not indigenous or local to the impact area?
