I have a book in press with Michigan State University Press titled "In the Wake of Violence: The Rhetorical Reconstruction of Image in Social Reform Movements." Over the long existence of a single-issue reform movement, only a small portion of movement members utilize the terrorism of bombing, arson, even—in still rarer cases—assault, death threats, and murder to precipitate a crisis providing pressure for reform. The violent actions of the radical wing of single-issue reform movements put particular pressures on the majority of movement members. One primary concern of mainstream reformers is the impact violence may have on the movement’s reputation. Thus, image restoration techniques are brought to bear for a reform cause just as surely as for an individual or corporation accused of wrongdoing. This study uncovers common themes in the rhetoric of the abolition, women’s suffrage, anti-abortion, animal rights, and environmental reform movements when faced with violence by their radical wing. I worked with a former student of mine, Ashley Markovitch Swistak, on a parallel study for her Westover Honors thesis on restoration of Arab-American image following 9/11. Her findings were so interesting that they were discussed in the conclusion of the book.
