Emory Defeats LC 2-0 in Pitchers Duel at Regionals
LC Looks to Stay Alive Sunday at noon

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Junior Ashley Tobar threw a complete-game shutout Saturday as Emory University (GA) defeated Lynchburg College 2-0 in the winner’s bracket finals at the 2007 NCAA Division III Softball Regional, hosted by Methodist University. Emory just has to win one more time to win the regional, while Lynchburg is scheduled to play the winner of today’s Marietta College/Salisbury University elimination game at noon on Sunday for the right to square off with Emory later in the day.

The Eagles (31-6) took advantage of a two-out error to score a single run in the bottom of the second inning. Emory threatened again in the third frame, plating one run with runners at second and third and no outs. But Hornet senior hurler Larissa Roscher (Westfield, VA/Centerville) worked out of the jam to keep LC behind just 2-0.

The Hornets got the lead-off batter on twice in the middle innings, but lost two chances to get on the scoreboard when a runner left base early in the third and an attempted sacrifice bunt turned into a pop-up double play in the fourth. Junior Elizabeth Perkins (Kents Store, VA/Fluvanna County) led off the sixth with a double to the right field gap, but Tobar got through the inning unscathed.

Roscher was the tough-luck loser, allowing just five hits, one walk and one earned run with two strikeouts. Perkins was 2-3, as was junior backstop Kirstin Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy). The Hornets left eight runners on base.

Tolar scattered eight hits and walked one batter to run her record to 13-2 on the season. Ali Braverman doubled for the Eagles.
