For immediate release – 5/11/2007 - #351 FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Sophomore Tara Campbell (Leesville, VA/Loudoun County) lifted a three-run home run over the centerfield fence Friday to break a 3-3 tie and give the Lynchburg College softball team a 6-3 win over Christopher Newport University on day two of the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament, hosted by Methodist University. The Hornets, now 2-0 in the eight-team bracket, will play Emory University (GA) Saturday at 2 p.m. in the finals of the winners’ bracket. The Lady Captains got on the scoreboard early, plating a run in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly. The Hornets scored three times in the bottom of the inning, as a fielder’s choice and a two-run single from junior Kirstin Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) put LC ahead 3-1. CNU started the fourth inning with back-to-back doubles from Marget Severin and Lauren Pleveich, but LC starter Ali Manns (Weaverville, NC/North Buncombe) allowed just one run in the inning. Larissa Roscher (Centreville, VA/Westfield) relieved Manns after four innings, but CNU tied the contest with a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the fifth. Caroline Cubbage (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) started out the deciding sixth inning with a walk and Elizabeth Perkins (Kents Store, VA/Fluvanna County) doubled to center field to set the stage for Campbell’s go-ahead big fly. The Captains had their lead-off hitter on base in the seventh, but the threat was erased by a 5-4-3 double play. Roscher walked five in her three innings, but allowed just one hit and one run to earn the victory. Campbell drove in four runs on the day, and Swank, Audra Della Rosa (Rumford, RI/St. Mary Academy Bayview) and Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Johnathan Law) each had two hits. Severin and Pleveich each had two hits for CNU (34-9). The winner of Saturday’s Lynchburg/Emory game will have to win just one more game Sunday to win the double-elimination regional and advance to the NCAA Finals next weekend in Salem, VA. There are still six teams remaining entering play on Saturday. ### |
