Roanoke Defeats LC Men’s Lax 11-9 in ODAC Title Game
Hornets Not Selected for NCAA At-Large bid

Box Score

SALEM, VA – The top-seeded Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team used a strong third quarter Sunday and four goals from senior attack Jon Mason to defeat Lynchburg College 11-9 in the championship game of the 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. The Maroons earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, while the Hornets found out Sunday evening that they did not receive an at-large bid.

The Hornets’ Stephen Weis (St. Louis, MO/Christian Brothers) put Lynchburg ahead 40 seconds into the action and gave LC a 2-0 edge with another goal at the 6:40 mark. The Hornets had a 3-0 advantage before Roanoke scored four-straight, two from Mason, to take a 4-3 lead midway through the second period. Tallies from Kyle McGuire (Burke, VA/Robinson) and Johnny Black (Timonium, MD/St. Paul’s) left Lynchburg ahead 5-4 at intermission.

The third quarter belonged to the home team, as Mason, Billy Cameron, Brendan Moore and Pat March delivered four unanswered goals to give RC an 8-5 lead it would never relinquish. LC leading scorer Tyler Tolson (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) got on the scoreboard just before the third quarter ended to make it 8-6. Early fourth-quarter scores from Ashton Hotchkiss and Mason gave the Maroons a large enough cushion that three fourth-quarter goals from Hornet senior Brian McCulloch (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) wasn’t enough.

Mason had four scores for RC (14-4), while Hotchkiss had two. Chaz Carlson had two assists and goalie Jake Dorsey made 14 stops. McGuire posted a goal and two assists for the Hornets and Ryan Cranston (West Chester, PA/Henderson) had a goal and an assist.

Lynchburg held a 42-38 shot advantage over RC, but the Maroons controlled 14 of the game’s 24 face-offs. Cameron won 10 of his 17 face-off attempts. LC ends the season at 13-4 overall.
