Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – Second-seeded Hampden-Sydney College advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Title game with a 3-2 victory over Lynchburg College Sunday in a semifinal elimination game.

Hampden-Sydney left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, but got on the scoreboard in the second frame after John Apperson singled, stole second and third base and scored on a single from Daniel Prieto. LC knotted the score at one in the third when an RBI single from Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) plated Mark Carlson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads). Prieto knocked in two more runs in the fourth with another single, but the Hornets chipped away at the lead with a single run in their half of the sixth. Tiger pitcher Larry Greene made the one-run lead stand up by allowing just one base runner in the final three innings.

Greene threw a complete-game five hitter for H-SC (25-17), walking just one while striking out six. Bradley was 3-4 for Lynchburg with a double, a run and an RBI. Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Eric O’Brien (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) accounted for Lynchburg’s other two hits. Jonathan Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and D.W. Moore (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) worked 4.1 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief to keep LC close.

Hampden-Sydney advances into the ODAC Title game against Bridgewater, to be played Sunday at 4 p.m. The Hornets end the 2007 season with a 23-18 mark - suffering two one-run losses in the conference tournament.
