Bridgewater Defeats LC Baseball 2-1 in ODAC Tourney

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – Senior Ricky Read threw a complete-game five-hitter Thursday evening to lead fourth-seeded Bridgewater College over #3 Lynchburg College 2-1 in the first day of play at the 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament at Lynchburg’s City Stadium.

The contest was scoreless through four before the Eagles plated two in the top of the fifth. Jono Brooks opened the inning with a double, and Drew Elkins reached on an error, scoring Brooks. Aaron Read singled to drive in Elkins to give the Eagles a two-run advantage. The Hornets scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh, as Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) led off with a single and scored on a hit-and-run single from Justin Kelly (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights). Lynchburg left two runners on base in the frame, and Reed didn’t allow another Hornet to reach base.

Jonathan Sewell (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s Belfield) was 2-3 for Lynchburg and Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) doubled. Jason Kelly (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) was the tough-luck loser for Lynchburg on the hill, allowing just four hits and no walks and one unearned run while striking out eight in 7.2 innings.

Ricky Reed struck out 11 batters with just one walk in a contest that took less than two hours. Aaron Read was 2-3 to lead the Bridgewater (18-20) offense.

The Hornets (21-17) face top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament. VWC defeated #6 Randolph-Macon 7-6 in the first game of the day, while #2 Hampden-Sydney College upended #5 Washington & Lee University.
