VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Trailing 6-1 in the first half and 12-7 at halftime, the Lynchburg College women’s lacrosse team rallied for a dramatic 17-16 victory at Virginia Wesleyan College in the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament.

Virginia Wesleyan opened the 6-1 advantage just eight minutes into the game and the teams each scored six times more before intermission. The Hornets returned the favor in the second half, netting seven of the first eight scores to take a 14-13 lead with 10:35 left in the game. The Marlins scored three of the next four times to take a 16-15 lead in the closing minutes, but a tally from junior Nichole Locher (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) knotted the game with 2:23 left. Senior midfielder Sarah Rahl (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) assured herself of at least one more game in the hornet uniform with an unassisted goal at the 1:44 mark and the LC defense made the one-goal lead stand up.

Sophomore attack Deana Welsch (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) ended the game with six goals, while freshman Kathryn Ollice (West Chester, PA/West Chester) posted four scores and two assists. Rahl found the back of the net three times, Locher contributed two goals and two assists and Shannon Smith (Marshall, VA/Osborn Park) had two scores. Michelle Chartier (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame) assisted on two goals.

Bethany Adomanis scored four times for the Marlins (7-10), while Laura Norris had three goals and three assists. Lynchburg out shot Va. Wesleyan 39-32, while the Marlins corralled 22 of the game’s 35 draw controls.

Lynchburg (8-9) advances into the ODAC semifinals to face top-seeded Washington & Lee University on Saturday in Lexington, VA at 12:30 p.m.
