CNU Baseball Outlasts LC 3-2 in 10

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team scored twice in the ninth inning to force extra innings Wednesday, but Christopher Newport University defeated the Hornets 3-2 in 10 innings in non-conference play.

The Captains scored one run in the first inning and plated their second tally with a pair of doubles in the seventh. CNU junior Kenny Moreland allowed just four hits in the first eight frames, but ran into trouble with none on and two out in the ninth. After a walk and a hits batsman, a double into the left-center field gap by Jon Crews (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) plated two Hornets to tie the ballgame. Eric Cole singled to score Mike Giarrizzi with none out in the 10th inning for the winning run.

Johnathan Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) started for LC and scattered 12 hits in his seven innings, striking out eight. Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) doubled for LC.

Zach Hutchison went 3-5 with two doubles and Trae Bailey also had three hits for Christopher Newport (21-15).

The Hornets (18-15) host Roanoke College Saturday at noon for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader. The program’s seven seniors will be honored before the game on Senior Day.
