For immediate release – 3/29/2007 - #267 LYNCHBURG, VA – Three Lynchburg College women’s basketball players will represent the United States and Athletes International in the Arafura Games, May 10-22 - hosted by Australia. Hornet head coach Stephanie Tobey will be coaching the American team and was responsible for recruiting the squad, which includes LC guards Kristina Darby (Tampa, FL/Holy Names), Dana Esposito (New Port Richie, FL/Holy Names) and Danielle Miller (Sterling, VA/Westfield). All three Hornets maintain a 3.0 GPA as freshmen and volunteer with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Virginia. Miller was awarded a scholarship because of her contribution to the program and to the classroom, carrying a 3.7 GPA. Assistant coach Chelsea Haines will also be making the trip. "I think this is a great opportunity for our girls to explore a different part of the world and to be able to play against some of the finest competition other nations have to offer," Tobey said. "The ladies will be able to explore and serve as sports ambassadors, this is not only good for their growth as people but our growth as a program. We will be able to bring back everything we learn to our program and hopefully be able to use this as a recruiting tool for years to come." The Lynchburg College athletes will be competing against 25 other nations in Darwin, Cairns and Sydney. Besides playing basketball and competing for a gold medal over the two-week tournament, participants will have the opportunity to explore the Litchfield Waterfalls, Kakada National Park, Mindil Beach Sunset Market, Cairns Esplandade and Lagoon and scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Two other local players, Stephanie Harrold and Alicia Sanders from Shenandoah University, will also be on the team. You can get more information at www.usaai.org. ### |
