Hornet Track Hosts LC Invite

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Hornet outdoor track & field team hosted the Lynchburg College Invitational Saturday, the first outdoor meet hosted by the program in three years. The running and jumping events took place on the newly remodeled Shellenberger Field and Track, while the throwing events were held on Aubrey Moon, Jr. Field.

Freshman Chris Word (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) enjoyed a fine day - running the 200-meter dash in 22.22 and the 400 in 48.80. He joined with Robert Jackson, Will Tolbert (Missouri City, TX/Hightower) and Earl Graves (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) to run a winning time of 3:15.59 in the 4x400-meter relay. Word ran a 48.15 in his leg of the relay. Andy Rollins also qualified provisionally for national competition by clearing 16 feet in the pole vault, and Chris Martin (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) leaped 45’5.25" in the triple jump. Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, VA/Damascus) won the 1,500 meters in 4:05.26 and Bryan Kirby (Alexandria, VA/Edison) and Travis Wray (Newburg, MD/La Plata) ran a 1:55.96 and a 1:56.31, respectively in the 800 meters.

Sarah Funderburke (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland) ran a 26.10 in the women’s 200-meter dash and Kyra Richardson (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) finished the 100-meter dash in 13.17, the 200 in 27.12 and cleared 16’05" in the long jump. Heather Jones (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) placed fourth in the hammer throw (117’04") and Danielle Garafalo (Boxford, MA/Masconomet) leaped 4’11.75" in the high jump.

The Hornets will have athletes competing next Saturday at both Emory University (GA) and across town at Liberty University.
