Hornet Baseball Rallies to Split Doubleheader at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday at Bridgewater College losing the first game 3-1 and winning the second 6-5 in 10 innings.

Ricky Read controlled the opener on the mound for the Eagles, throwing a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts and just one walk. Lynchburg scored its run in the first inning, as Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) doubled and came home on a single from Eric O’Brien (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring). Jason Kelly (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) worked all six innings for LC, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out six. Drew Elkins was 2-3 for the Eagles.

Bridgewater forged a 4-0 lead in the nightcap after four innings before the Hornets rallied. Lynchburg scored two in the fifth and one on the sixth, but BC plated another run in the seventh. LC tied the score with a pair of runs in the eighth and took the lead in the 10th inning after a single from Jonathan Sewell (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s Belfield). Jonathan Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) sent the Eagles down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to end the game. Nichols earned the win in relief, working 3.2 innings and allowing one hit and no runs. Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was 3-4 with a double, and Sewell and O’Brien each had two hits.

Lynchburg (10-4/3-1 ODAC) travels to Averett University for a non-conference game Tuesday at 2 p.m.
