Hornet Tennis Splits with Greensboro

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College tennis teams opened their 2007 home season Tuesday, with the men defeating Greensboro College 5-4 and the women dropping a tight 5-4 decision to Greensboro.

Sophomore Anthony D’Angelo (Sound Beach, NY/Rocky Point) and junior Jay Duimstra (Toms River, NJ/Toms River) each won twice in men’s competition. D’Angelo won his match at #4 singles 6-1, 6-2; Duimstra defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-1 at #5 singles and the two teamed to win 8-0 at #3 doubles. John Matthews (Remington, VA/Culpeper County) posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at #6 singles while David O’Brien (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) and Daniel Civis (Forest, VA/Holy Cross) won at #2 doubles.

The Hornet women took two of the three doubles matches, including a comeback win at #2 by Whitney Robinson (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) and Rachel Ferrara (Skillman, NJ/Notre Dame) 9-8 (10-7). Krysten Bishop (Big Rapids, MI/Big Rapids) and Elizabeth Eckert (Annandale, VA/Annandale) won at #3 doubles 8-2 and Eckert was victorious at #4 singles. Krysta Pappas (Clearwater, FL/Clearwater) held on to win 7-5, 7-5 at #6 singles.

The women’s team hosts Washington & Lee University Wednesday at 4 p.m., while the men travel to W&L Thursday for a match at 3 p.m.
