LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team swept both ends of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday, defeating Mountain State University 2-0 and 6-5.

Senior right fielder Caroline Cubbage (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) slugged a two-run home run in the bottom of the third, providing all the offense that Lynchburg would need in the opener. Senior Ali Manns (Weaverville, NC/North Buncombe) worked four innings to earn the win, giving up just one hit and two walks. Senior Larissa Roscher (Centreville, VA/Westfield) was perfect over the last three innings, striking out five, to post her first save of the season. Stephanie Barrow scattered four hits and five walks for Mountain State.

Junior Elizabeth Perkins (Kents Store, VA/Fluvanna County) got the Lynchburg offense rolling early in the nightcap, lifting a two-run home run over the right center field fence in the first inning. The Hornets held leads of 3-0, 4-1 and 6-3, but the Cougars would not go away quietly, rallying each time. The final Mountain State threat was thwarted when Roscher struck out a Cougar batter in the top of the seventh with the tying and go-ahead runners on second and third base to end the game. Perkins was 2-3, Amber James (Manahawkin, NJ/South Regional) was 2-3 with a double and freshman Audra Della Rosa (Rumford, RI/St. Mary Academy Bay View) provided a clutch two-run single in the sixth to give LC two needed insurance runs. Barbie Miles (Kinsale, VA/Washington & Lee) threw four innings, striking out five and allowing one hit and one unearned run for the win.

Lynchburg (4-0) will compete in the Virginia Wesleyan College Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
