Hornet Men Win 10th Straight ODAC Indoor Track title

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men’s indoor track and field team won its 10th straight conference title Saturday at the 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship, hosted by Liberty University. The Hornet women’s team placed third in the five-team field.

Sophomore Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) was named the Most Valuable Performer of the Meet, and Hornet mentor Dr. Jack Toms was named the ODAC Men’s Coach of the Year, the 60th time in his track and cross country career that he has been recognized as the conference’s top coach. Junior Scott Decker (Clifton, VA/Robinson) was voted by the conference’s sports information directors as the ODAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and junior Mary Mohay (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) earned the ODAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

The LC men won the meet with 181.50 points, followed by Bridgewater College with 107 and Eastern Mennonite University with 83 points. Flynn won the 5,000 meter run in 15:20.30 and took second in the mile in 4:25.08. Senior Ryan Holmes (Glen Allen, VA/JR Tucker) won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.03 and the triple jump with a leap of 45’7" and took fourth in the high jump - clearing six feet. Travis Wray (Newburg, MD/La Plata) won the mile run in 4:24.99, Rory Lee-Washington won the weight throw with a top heave of 54"7 1/4" and Decker won the pole vault, clearing 15’7". Brian Wright (Hardy, VA/Franklin County) won the high jump, leaping 6’4" and Chris Martin (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) placed second in the triple jump (43’5") and fourth in the long jump (21’3 1/2"). Earl Graves (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) finished third in the 200-meter dash (22.92) and the 400-meter dash (50.52). It is the Hornet men’s 33rd crown in the last 35 championship meets, counting both indoor and outdoor titles.

Roanoke won the women’s title, narrowing outscoring second-place Washington & Lee 174 to 161 points, followed by Lynchburg with 63. Mohay won the women’s pole vault – clearing 10’10", and Sarah Funderburke (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland) took third in both the 200-meter dash in 26.65 and the 400-meter dash in 59.24. Amanda Diver (Boxford, MA/Masconomet) took third in the 800 meters (2:26.97), Heather Jones (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) was third in the weight throw (40’11 3/4") and Heather Shaw (Alpine, NJ/Tenafly) was third in the pole vault (9’4 1/4").
