Lynchburg College has been named a subgrantee of a federal Learn & Serve America Grant spearheaded by Princeton University to increase community-based research on a variety of policy issues.
Learn & Serve America, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, provides support to schools, community groups, and higher education institutions to facilitate service-learning projects. Lynchburg College was one of 20 institutions of higher education receiving this award. Others include Duke University, Dickinson College, Yale University, and Washington and Lee University.
The grant will fund LC’s participation in the National Community-Based Research (CBR) Networking Initiative, a network of subgrantees developing CBR programs. LC will receive $25,500 over the next three years.
LC faculty and students will work with community partners on topics of mutual interest and benefit, such as creating environmental standards for low-impact design for new development.
"The emphasis is on projects that will have an impact on public policy," said project director Lisa Whitaker, who is associate director for college and community partnerships at LC.
