Hornets Open Home Season with Two Wins

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team topped Southern Virginia University 8-6 and 15-7 Saturday in a home opening non-conference double header sweep at Fox Field. The Hornet bats were hot on a cold afternoon, collecting 27 hits in the two games.

In the first game, Jason Kelly (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on six hits and striking out 10 for the win. Shortstop Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, VA/Staunton River) led the Hornets at the plate, going 3-for-3 and driving in two runs. Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) chipped in with two hits and three runs. Greg Larson went 1-for-3 and scored two runs to lead Southern Virginia.

LaBrie also provided the offensive punch in the second game, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) also went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. D.W. Moore (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) struck out four in 5 1/2 innings of work to pick up the win. Troy Butterfield went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead the Knights (0-9).

The Hornets (4-1) take the field Wednesday at North Carolina Wesleyan. The first pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
