LC Softball Opens Season with DH Sweep of Meredith

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College softball team opened its 2007 season Saturday with a non-conference sweep of Meredith College 10-2 in six innings and 13-1 in five frames.

The Hornets broke open a close game in the opener with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Senior right fielder Caroline Cubbage (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) was 3-4 with a homer, three doubles, two runs and two RBI. Sophomore Tara Campbell (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun Co.) had a two-run homer and sophomore Amber James (Manahawkin, NJ/S. Regional) also drove in two runs. Ali Manns (Weaverville, NC/North Buncombe) worked five innings and scattered four hits to earn the win.

The Hornets exploded early in the nightcap, scoring 10 runs in the second inning to put the game away. Campbell homered again and drove in two runs, and Morgan Austin (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) had a three-run home run and Kirstin Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) doubled twice. Barbie Miles (Kinsale, VA/Washington & Lee) allowed just four hits to post the victory.

The Hornets (2-0) host Mountain State University Tuesday, February 27 in a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
