Hornet Men Drop 74-56 Decision to W&L

LEXINGTON, VA – The Washington & Lee University men’s basketball team defeated Lynchburg College 74-56 Sunday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

The Generals led 39-30 at the break. Each team shot well from the floor the first 20 minutes, with W&L hitting 15 of 27 (55.6 %), while LC connected on 11-22 (50%). The tide turned in the second half as the Hornets went cold (6-28: 21.4 %), and W&L took advantage with 50 percent shooting after intermission (12-24).

Freshman Steven Echols (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) scored a team-high 11 points for the Hornets, and added three assists and three steals. Evan Fancourt (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) scored 10 points, Kwame Safo (Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall) had nine points and four assists and Sean Sutherland (Alexandria, VA/Commonwealth) scored eight points.

Chris Halkitis had 17 points and three treys for Washington & Lee (11-11/6-10 ODAC). Greg Bienemann had 12 points while Femi Kusimo and Chris McHugh each had nine. The Generals out-rebounded Lynchburg 39-28.

Lynchburg (6-17/3-13 ODAC) host Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.
