Dr. Sangyoon LeeDr. Sangyoon Lee, president of Hannam University in Korea, will visit Lynchburg College on February 14 to strengthen an existing sister college relationship between the two institutions.

Dr. Lee will meet with LC President Ken Garren, as well as faculty, staff, and students with connections to or interest in Korea. Dr. Lee will be accompanied by Dr. Whankoo Kang, dean of Global Affairs at Hannam. They will be discussing a three-week long Korean culture program this summer, which a handful of LC staff and students attended in 2006.

LC and Hannam first signed a sister institution agreement in 1984. The colleges are hoping to strengthen other exchange opportunities for their students.

“The relationship between our institutions has been strong and effective for many years and I’m expecting to send our students in this year and also would like for students at your university to be able to visit us either for short or long periods of time,” Dr. Lee wrote in a letter to Dr. Garren.

“Lynchburg College views this visit as an important step in further developing the relationship that exists between the United States and Korea,” Dr. Garren said. “LC is dedicated to providing its students with opportunities for wholehearted participation in a global society. Our longstanding relationship with Hannam University is an important component in our efforts to create global opportunities for LC students.”

Hannam University was founded in 1956 on Christian principles and is committed to becoming a leading Asian Christian School, according to a message from Dr. Lee on the university’s website. Hannam plans to create a new model university that will employ an industrial-educational cooperative system with an emphasis on biotechnology. Hannam launched the first “Global College” in Korea, where students learn international trade and marketing concepts as part of an intensive, English-only curriculum.
