Catherine German West ’82, a member of the Lynchburg College Board of Trustees, was named executive vice president and chief operating officer of JC Penney Co. Inc. on June 5.

This news comes on the heels of West being named one of the Washington area’s 100 most powerful women in the June 2006 issue of Washingtonian magazine.

West moves to JC Penney from US Card, the largest division of Capital One Financial, where she has been president since 2004. She directed all product, marketing, and consumer-service activities for more than $48 billion in managed loans and $7.9 billion in revenues.

West, who was named to the Board of Trustees in October 2005, majored in sociology and psychology at LC. “I went in as a young girl, and Lynchburg touched my soul for four years,” she told the Washingtonian. “I came out a confident woman.”

At Texas-based JC Penney, West will be responsible for stores, logistics and supply chain operations, and property development initiatives, including new stores. JC Penney recently announced plans to open 27 stores in 2006 and an additional 150 stores in 2007-2009.
