Rita Detwiler, vice president for enrollment management, said the increased applicant pool allows the College to be more selective by looking not just at SAT scores, but more closely at the whole student and his or her high school performance.
Detwiler said a number of factors are prompting more students to consider Lynchburg College. The word is continuing to spread about the quality of learning and living — from nationally and internationally recognized faculty and intentional learning communities to new facilities like Centennial Hall, the $12.5 million home to the School of Business and Economics, School of Communication and the Arts, and the modern languages lab. Numerous opportunities for student involvement are also attractive to undergraduates, 90 percent of whom live on campus in a variety of residential settings.
“The momentum is very positive for the institution,” Detwiler said, noting that LC competes well with both private and public colleges and universities in Virginia. “Value for families is the bottom line.”
LC expects to enroll about 550 freshmen in the fall, a number that has stayed consistent in recent years, and meets the College’s goal. About 12 percent of the freshmen class will be multicultural.
