A. Boyd Claytor III, who put his 470-acre farm in a conservation easement in 1997 and then donated it to Lynchburg College in 1998 to establish the Claytor Nature Study Center for environmental study and research, has been awarded the first Barbara Hatcher Land Preservation Award.

Mr. Claytor, now a member of the Lynchburg College Board of Trustees, donated his Cloverlea Farm to the College to preserve the land in its natural state and to promote learning about the natural environment.

In October 2003, the College dedicated a $1.5 million educational and research facility at the center to enhance learning opportunities for area students and residents. Gardens at the Claytor Nature Study Center will be named to honor Mr. Claytor’s wife, the late Virginia Arnold Claytor. The College also recently announced plans to build an astronomical observatory at the center.

The Lynchburg College Alumni Association awarded its 2004 Honorary Alumni Award to Mr. Claytor. The award recognizes non-alumni for their exceptional interest, dedication, and service to the college. Mr. Claytor is the retired president of Southern Flavoring Co. in Bedford.

The Barbara Hatcher Land Preservation Award, to be given annually, is named in honor of the first woman in Bedford County to place a land conservation easement on her property.
