Hornet Track and Field Competes at UNC and VMI

CHAPEL HILL, NC & LEXINGTON, VA – The Lynchburg College indoor track and field team traveled both north and south Saturday, entering meets at the University of North Carolina and the Virginia Military Institute.

At UNC, Travis Wray (Newburg, MD/La Plata) ran a 4:26.70 in the mile run, with teammate Chris Irby (South Boston, VA/Halifax County) not far behind in 4:34.50. Scott Decker (Clifton, VA/Robinson) cleared 15’1" in the pole vault and Anthony Pavia (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) cleared 14’7". Will Tolbert (Missouri City, TX/Hightower) and Chris Word (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) recorded times of 51.73 and 51.82, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. For the Lynchburg women in Chapel Hill, Sarah Funderburke (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland) ran a season-best 26.99 in the 200-meter dash and Amanda Diver (Boxford, MA/Masconomet) finished the 800-meters in 2:32.29.

At VMI, Justin Hazelrigg (Bedford, VA/Liberty) threw 47’0" in the men’s weight throw. Heather Jones (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) threw 41 feet in the women’s weight throw and Amanda Darling (Lyman, ME/Thornton Academy) had a 39-foot heave.

Lynchburg will compete at Christopher Newport University next Saturday.
