Lynchburg College students began participating in the sport of ice hockey in 2005-2006 under the direction of Randy Sulcer and Mike Mann. As it was not yet considered a club on campus, the group participated in a local men’s league at Liberty University’s LaHaye Ice Center without any school recognition or support. During the 2006-2007 season, club president Ryan Branigan and vice president Mike Mann made the team an official club on campus, and this past school year, the team competed in the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference. Hornets Hockey has steadily gained recognition among students on campus since its inauguration in 2005.

The Hornets Hockey Team just completed its first season in the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference. The BRHC is made up of club hockey teams throughout the southeastern states. As a first-year team, the Hornets were on provisional status with playoff eligibility, meaning they competed against all the teams in their division as a trial for a potential full spot in the league for the following season. With competition against William & Mary, Old Dominion University, Christopher Newport University, Virginia Military Institute, Radford, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, and NC State University, the team finally faced the competition it needs.
