The Lynchburg College Habitat for Humanity Chapter is raising money to build a house for two employees who work in the college’s dining services.

By Commencement weekend, Donald and Renee Walker will be the proud owners of the new house on Hood Street, which is within walking distance of the campus.

This will be the fourth house the LC chapter has built for its own employees. Elizabeth Richardson with Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity said it’s unusual for members of an institution to build a home for their own colleagues.

One of the biggest fundraisers for the project, “A Home for the Holidays: A Lynchburg College Habitat Build Banquet,” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 19 in the Memorial Ballroom in Hall Campus Center. Music will be provided by The McKenzies: Dr. Woody McKenzie, associate professor of education and human development, Lynchburg College, and Marcia McKenzie. The dinner dance is sponsored by Lynchburg College Office of Students Engaged in Responsible Volunteer Experiences (SERVE). The cost is $50 per person and reservations must be made at 434/544-8551 or 434/544-8470 by noon Dec. 14.

Anne Gibbons, director of SERVE and associate chaplain of the college, said she hopes the larger community will also see this as a way to give in the true spirit of Christmas, while enjoying music and a delicious meal by LC Chef Michial Neal.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the holiday season than to share a meal with good friends, to enjoy great music and to know that an evening of enjoyment will actually benefit a very special couple from the LC family.” Gibbons said. “During a time of year when we remember a holy family in need of a home, we can also remember and reach out to a family in our midst desiring their own “home for the holidays.”

The first opportunities to work at the building site will be on Friday, Dec. 1, Saturday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 9. Monetary contributions can also be made on line at http://www.lynchburghabitat.org by clicking on “donations,” “donate now,” and the “designation” field. Be sure to write “Lynchburg College Habitat Chapter” in the designation field.
