1. Do we have to go to classes if the power goes out?

The Dean of the College is the one who makes that determination.  However, individual professors may cancel their own classes.  If you have not received word that classes are canceled then go to class.  Information about the outage and about classes will be on large notes that will be placed on residential buildings.  You may also call extension S N O W for any College-wide information.

2. When will the power be back on?

The College is on a separate grid from the rest of the city and so it depends on the type problem and its source.

3. Are flashlights available?

Flashlights are kept in the Office of Residence Life and Hall Directors have access to them if the power goes out.

4. Can we use candles during a power outage?

Candles (torches, and all other exposed flames) are still against College policy during a power outage.  The risk of causing a fire is even greater during this time.

5. Will the toilets work during a power outage?

Yes, the water system is not linked to the electrical system except to heat the water.  You may flush and wash your hands during an outage but you will not have hot water.

6. Is there someplace safe for us to go if the power outage is really bad?

Yes!!  In instances where the outage has occurred at night or for an extended period, the cafeteria will be open to accommodate students.  The cafeteria has a generator and as such there will be some power there.

7. How do we know what caused the power outage?

After investigating and identifying the problem, the Physical Plant will notify Greg Nayor, Director of Residence Life, and he will in turn notify the ResLife staff who will then be able to pass on the information to the students.

8. Who makes the signs that are put on the buildings?

Volunteers!!

9. What if I need to get out of the dark?

Hallway emergency lights have battery packs which, when fully charged, will provide 90 minutes of backup light.  If the emergency lights are not sufficient, then go outside to the Dell, Shellenberger Field, or Pavilion. The cafeteria will also be open for students during an extended power outage.

10. What if someone is stuck in an elevator?

Call security!!  Security will call the elevator maintenance crew and/or the fire department.

11. Are there first aid kits available?

Hall Directors and Resident Assistants have access to each building’s first aid kit.
