Student Development Graduate Assistantships

The Department of Student Development at Lynchburg College is pleased to offer Graduate Assistant opportunities for students seeking a graduate degree.  Candidates have the ability to work in a dynamic organization and gain real-world experience in a variety of fields including Residence Life, Student Activities, Multicultural, Access, and Commuter Services (MACS), Wellness Education, and Judicial Affairs.

Basic Qualifications

  • An earned bachelor's degree;
  • Acceptance and enrollment into a graduate program at Lynchburg College;
  • Prior experience in an area of Student Development (see specific descriptions below);
  • The ability to write and communicate effectively with all segments of the campus community;
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills;
  • A student-centered approach;
  • The desire to learn and grow.

Remuneration

  • On-campus housing (required for some positions);
  • Meal Plan when school is in session (varies, depending on position);
  • Tuition remission - up to 18 graduate hours per year (varies, depending on position);

Hall Director (Office of Residence Life)

  • Overall management of a residence hall;
  • Directly supervise Resident Assistants and one Assistant Hall Director;
  • Build community for the residents;
  • Serve on various committees within residence life;
  • Assist college community in maintaining community standards;
  • Monitor the programming efforts of the staff;
  • Help coordinate training efforts for the department;
  • Additional corollary responsibilities within department and Student Development.

Housing Assistant and ORL Webmaster (Office of Residence Life)

  • Advise students on personal, social, and academic matters;
  • Attend various Residence Life Staff meetings;
  • Assist Housing Coordinator;
  • Manage Residence Life website;
  • Coordinate walk-through schedules with Hall Directors;
  • Track and follow-up on work orders as necessary;
  • Assist in special office functions as needed;
  • Maintain office hours.

GA for Leadership Programs and Special Projects (Office of Student Activities)

  • Proofread and update manuals for OSA programs;
  • Coordinate with the Director of Student Activities all facets of the Fall Leadership Conference;
  • Assist the Director with all aspects of the emerging leader program, LC LEADS.
  • Coordinate all facets of the spring leadership awards ceremony, including coordination of the nomination process.
  • Update office activities calendar and produce monthly publicity for campus.
  • Assist in general operations of the office including supervision of office assistants, answering telephone calls, responding to requests, and providing clerical support to the staff.
  • Perform other related duties as may be required.

GA for Weekend Projects (Office of Student Activities)

  • Coordinate the calendar of events for weekend programming.
  • Advise groups on program planning details and suggestions.
  • Meet with the organization representatives responsible for the implementation of events two weeks in advance of event date.
  • Design and distribute publicity for weekend programs.
  • Monitor and manage all budget items related to program implementation.
  • Attend/supervise all Lynchburg Late Nite (LLN) programs.
  • Complete evaluations and assessment of weekend activities.
  • Perform other related duties as may be required.

GA for Multicultural, Access, and Commuter Services (MACS)

  • Provide services for the College's non-traditional students including international students, adult learners (age 25 and older), commuter students, and students representing ethnic, racial, and religious diversity;
  • Coordinate multicultural programming for the entire campus community;
  • Advise special interest groups;
  • Serve as director of International House, a multicultural living environment. 


GA for Judicial Affairs (Office of the Dean of Students)

  • Contribute to implementation of the student judicial process, including verification of sanction completion;
  • Provide information and guidance to students as they complete sanctions;
  • Complete administrative tasks regarding sanction completion, including database entry, correspondence, and progress reports;
  • Develop and implement educational efforts to raise awareness and understanding of the Honor and Student Conduct Codes and Regulations;
  • Identify educational materials appropriate for use in sanctioning, such as books, videos, and programs;
  • Additional corollary responsibilities within the office and Student Development.

GA for Wellness Education (Office of Wellness Education)*

  • Work with the coordinator to assess culture on campus in regards to alcohol and other drug use and use this information to guide programming and activities;
  • Enable students who make poor choices to learn from their mistakes and gain resources for future responsible decision making;
  • Work with campus and community partners to combat the occurrence of high-risk drinking by Lynchburg College students;
  • Develop resources, presentations, educational programs, and bulletin boards on various aspects of healthy living and responsible decision making;
  • Work with at-risk populations (e.g. Greeks, athletes, first-year students) to proactively address alcohol use and responsible behavior within their communities;
  • Provide healthy, safe, and fun non-alcoholic programs for the campus community;
  • Plan, implement, and promote educational activities that enhance the health and well-being of students;
  • Help advise the student organization PACE (peer educators);
  • Assist with national programming weeks, including:  National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Safe Spring Break, and Sexual Health Awareness Week;
  • Serve on various committees, including: Connection Committee, Campus Task Force on Substance Abuse Prevention.
