Hornet Men Defeat Southern Virginia 95-91 in OT

LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior Evan Fancourt (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) tallied six points, three steals and two assists in overtime Wednesday evening to lead the Lynchburg College men’s basketball team to a 95-91 win over visiting Southern Virginia University.

The Hornets led 43-40 at halftime and extended the advantage to 14 with 5:45 on the game clock. The Knights chipped away and drew within two after a Tanner Johnson three-pointer with one minute left. David Borland connected on a lay-up on an in-bounds play with 13 seconds remaining and an LC mid-range jumper at the buzzer fell short to force overtime. Dallas Rivera hit a three to put SVU ahead 79-76 seven seconds into the extra period, but Fancourt sparked a 9-0 run early in the overtime session.

Sophomore Jack Burgess (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) scored a career-high 25 points for Lynchburg, nailing four three-pointers and all seven of his free throws. Drew Norris (Richmond, VA/Steward School) hit five first-half treys and ended with 18 points, Fancourt finished with 12 and Kwame Safo (Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall) posted 10 points and five assists.

Johnson posted 26 points and eight caroms for Southern Virginia (7-10). Rivera had 16 while Cameron Gentry and Borland each had 15.

Lynchburg (4-6) hosts Eastern Mennonite University Saturday at 1 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.
