For immediate release – 12/30/2006 - #146 WESTERVILLE, OHIO – Despite 24 points from freshman guard Dana Esposito (New Port Richie, FL/Holy Names), the Lynchburg College women’s basketball team was defeated 89-69 Saturday by Carnegie Mellon University (PA) in the consolation game of the Smokey Ballenger Classic – hosted by Otterbein University. CMU led 37-36 at the half, but LC took a 56-53 advantage with 11 minutes remaining in the contest. Carnegie Mellon used an 18-0 run to go ahead by 15 points and cruise to victory. Esposito hit 12 of her 19 field-goal attempts and added four assists and three steals. Kristina Darby (Tampa, FL/Holy Names) posted 16 points, four assists and three steals and was named to the All-Classic Team. Senior center Caroline Wesley (Baltimore, MD/Notre Dame) scored 14 points and added five rebounds, while Brittany Dahn (Glenn Allen, VA/Deep Run) tallied eight points and six rebounds. Stacie Aleski scored 29 points and also chipped in with six assists and five steals for CMU (5-4). With 14 points on the afternoon, Wesley stands at 991 for her career. She will look to join the 1,000-point club Friday, January 5 at 7 p.m. as the Hornets host Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game. Only five female student-athletes have scored 1,000 points in the history of LC basketball. ### |
