LC Men Upset #16 Randolph-Macon 78-70

LYNCHBURG, VA – Freshman forward Danny Reed (Adamstown, MD/Tuscarora) scored a game-high 23 points Wednesday to lead the Lynchburg College men’s basketball team to a 78-70 upset win over 16th-ranked Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

Lynchburg led by as many as 17 in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets closed to within 42-28 at intermission. RMC hit two three-pointers and a pair of free throws to start the second half but Lynchburg maintained a small advantage over the next 14 minutes until opening a 66-59 lead with 5:37 on the game clock. Stephen Sutherland hit his fifth three-pointer of the game for the Yellow Jackets and David Carlson buried two free throws to tighten the game at 66-64. Reed answered with his fourth three-point basket of the contest, but Carlson made two more free throws to cut the lead to 69-66. Senior Evan Fancourt (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) sank a three-pointer of his own with 2:42 on the clock and Reed and Fancourt combined to hit six free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Reed hit all nine of his chances from the charity stripe and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Drew Norris (Richmond, VA/Stewart School) scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half and hit three treys, and Kwame Safo (Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall) had 10 points and four assists. Fancourt and Steven Echols (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) each posted nine points and Peter Vasiliou (Chincoteague, VA/Chincoteague) tallied eight points and seven caroms. The Hornets were a perfect 21 of 21 from the free-throw line, with six different players attempting a free throw.

Carlson finished with 16 points and eight rebounds for Randolph-Macon (3-2/1-1 ODAC). Sutherland had 15, Jeremy Dixon had 12 while Adam Krovic ended the night with 10 points and eight assists. R-MC hit just seven of its 27 three point tries (25.9%), while Lynchburg connected on nine of 22 shots (40.9%) from downtown.

Lynchburg (2-4/1-1 ODAC) travels to Emory & Henry College Saturday for another ODAC game at 7 p.m.
