For immediate release – 11/29/2006 - #130 DANVILLE, VA – Despite a career-high 31 points from Hornet freshman Steven Echols (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle), the undefeated Averett University men’s basketball team outlasted Lynchburg College 84-77 Wednesday evening in non-conference play. The game was tied at 30 at halftime, and Lynchburg led 56-53 with 9:30 remaining. A 10-0 Cougar run over the next two minutes put Averett ahead 63-56, but LC drew back to within three points with 4:50 left on the game clock. Averett scored eight unanswered points to build a comfortable 11-point edge and held on for the win. Echols hit six of nine three-point attempts and 12 of 21 overall en route to his game-high point total. Kwame Safo (Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall) posted 17 points on seven of nine shooting and added four rebounds and four assists. Evan Fancourt (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley) scored eight points and snared a team-high nine rebounds. Jonathan Rumley carried Averett (5-0) with 25 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Cory McDaniel had 15 points and six boards while Damien Brown scored 16 points. Lynchburg (1-3) travels to Greensboro, NC Saturday to face Guilford College at 3 p.m. ### |
