The Shirley E. Rosser Award for Excellence in Teaching, Lynchburg College's top teaching honor, is presented each year to a member of the teaching faculty of the College in recognition of personal and inspirational teaching, consistency of course preparation, current study in one's field, and encouragement given to students to be active and lifelong learners. The award is named for Shirley E. Rosser, a professor in the Department of Physics at Lynchburg College for forty-five years. A 1940 graduate of the College, he was loved and respected by many generations of students and faculty.

To be considered for the Rosser Award, a faculty member must be nominated by a student currently enrolled at Lynchburg College. The selection committee is comprised of previous Rosser Award recipients and will consider student comments and any support documentation submitted by the nominee.

To nominate a professor, please submit the following information:

  1. Tell us about the professor you are nominating. Explain why you think he or she deserves this award. Feel free to share stories about the nominee's commitment to students, performance in the classroom, or influence on your personal educational experience.
  2. Write a nomination of at least one or more paragraphs, so the committee that chooses the recipient has a clear idea of why your professor demonstrated excellence in teaching.
  3. Include in your nomination the professor's class in which you were enrolled and, of course, your name. All nominations are confidential unless you indicate you would like your submission shared with the professor in question.

Send your nomination by e-mail to Dr. Robert White, chair of the selection committee, at the following address: rosseraward@lynchburg.edu.

Nominations for this year's award should reach the chair of the committee by Friday, February 26, 2010.
