Lynchburg Men’s Basketball Opens with 101-83 Win at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, PA – The Lynchburg College men’s basketball team opened the 2006-07 season on a good note Friday evening, posting a 101-83 win over Westminster College in the first day of the Buzz Ridl Classic.

The Hornets rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit to trail just 54-48 at intermission. The Titans opened a 62-54 edge with 17 minutes remaining in the contest, but LC used a 17-2 run over the next 4:30 to take a seven-point lead and never looked back.

A trio of young Hornets led an efficient offense, as LC made 59 percent of its field-goal attempts (38-64). Sophomore swingman Drew Norris (Richmond, VA/Steward School) had 27 points on 11-15 shooting, including 5-of-7 from behind the three-point stripe. Freshman guard Steven Echols (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) posted 20 points, five rebounds and four assists while freshman forward Danny Reed (Adamstown, MD/Tuscarora) had 22 points and corralled 11 rebounds. Junior Kwame Safo (Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall) had 12 points and distributed eight assists.

Dom Joseph scored a team-best 15 points for Westminster. The Hornet defense held the Titans to just 8-of-40 shooting from three-point range (20%).

Lynchburg faces Robert’s Wesleyan (NY) Saturday at 2 p.m. in the second day of play of the classic. Hampden-Sydney College defeated the Raiders 87-85 earlier in the day Friday.
