College Recess and Residential Closure

In the case of a crisis, the College emergency planning team will make a decision as to whether or not to close campus.  If campus is closed, all residential facilities (residence halls, courts, townhouses, Peaksview apartment, and all College owned houses) will be closed.  The director will initiate a meeting with his central office staff (to occur in director’s office) to discuss the situation, prepare flyers, update the emergency information on the Residence Life website, etc.  After this planning meeting, the area coordinators will initiate the phone tree (as found on page two of this document), and staff will begin closing the halls.  In the case of a decision to close, Residence Life will have campus housing vacated within forty-eight hours.  Hall directors will call a meeting in a pre-determined location.  After completing their responsibilities, resident assistants will be able to leave as well.  Volunteers however, will be requested to stay to assist with other aspects of the crisis.  Volunteers will be assigned to areas by the director.

Students will be asked to leave campus and leave most of their belongings.  If the closing occurs at the end of the year, the staff will close the buildings per usual protocol.  At any other time throughout the year the campus will be closed per the checklist instructions provided to resident assistants.  The date and time residents have left will be recorded, rooms inspected and locked, belongings secured. Once all students have left, the hall directors will officially close their building or area.  The Office of Residence Life will then instruct Safety and Security to deactivate all ID cards, except for staff and essential personnel.  For houses, courts, and townhouses, cores will be changed for the doors to prevent students from returning.
