Hornet Men’s Soccer Defeats VWC 1-0 in ODAC Championships
LC to Advance to NCAA Division III Tournament

SALEM, VA – Senior midfielder Brian Cocchiola (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) scored midway through the second half to give the Lynchburg College men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan College in the championship game of the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. The Hornets now receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament – the field will be announced Monday.

Cocchiola’s unassisted score came at the 71:02 mark of the contest. Lynchburg out shot Virginia Wesleyan 12-5 and had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks and Zane Krezonis made seven stops for the Marlins (13-4-3). The Hornet defense gave up just one goal in 277 minutes and 11 seconds in the three matches of the tournament, and allowed no shots on goal in the tournament finale.

It is the program’s 11th ODAC title overall, but the first since the 1987 campaign. LC won league titles every year from 1976-1984 and again in 1987, but hadn’t captured the championship since the ODAC instituted a tournament in 1989.

Cocchiola, goalie Marcus Jordan (Lynchburg, VA/Germantown), midfielder Casey Zambor (Jackson, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) and Drew Jamison (New Castle, DE/Salesianum) were all named to the all-tournament team.
