Lynchburg Survives Late Rally by Virginia Wesleyan to Win 4-3

Lynchburg, VA – The Lynchburg College field hockey team suppressed a late rally by Virginia Wesleyan College to emerge with a 4-3 victory in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference semi-finals on Friday.

Lynchburg went up 4-1 three minutes into the second half, but Laura Weidema scored two goals in the last ten minutes to even the score at 4-3. The Marlins had several other scoring opportunities to tie the game, but the Lynchburg defense doused the rally. Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) opened the scoring for LC at the 1:41 mark and also scored the game-winner from Arianna Kleeman (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) at the 37:28 mark. Kleeman added a goal of her own from Olga Ozarslan (Falls Church, VA/George C. Marshall) in the 21st minute, while Laura Christianson (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) tallied a goal in the 30th minute from Morgan Crandall (Belfast, ME/Belfast).

Virginia Wesleyan (10-8) outshot Lynchburg 16-14 and each team posted seven penalty corners. Weidema tallied a hat-trick for the Marlins while Erica Boyce notched three assists. Elizabeth Foskey (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) stopped four shots for the Hornets while Kate Shelly recorded five saves for Virginia Wesleyan.

Lynchburg (17-2) will play in the ODAC Championship game Saturday at 4 p.m. against Eastern Mennonite University, a 3-0 winner against Washington & Lee University in the day’s other semifinal match-up. Sarah Roth, Lauren Michel and Julie Denlinger each scored unassisted goals for the Royals. EMU out shot the Generals 21-3 and held a 12-5 edge in penalty corners. W&L falls to 14-6 on the season and awaits a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, while the Royals enter the ODAC Title game at 13-5.
