Howard and Weir Score Twice as LC FH Defeats Catawba 4-1

LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior Samantha Howard (Fairfax Station, VA/W.T. Woodson) and freshman Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) each netted two goals Thursday as the Lynchburg College field hockey team defeated Division II opponent Catawba College 4-1. The win gives Hornet head mentor Enza Steele her career 400th victory, including 18 at the high school level and 382 at LC.

The Indians scored the games first tally as Aly Halter corralled a loose ball in front of the cage at the 24:15 mark. Weir scored from Morgan Crandall (Belfast, ME/Belfast) five minutes later and the game was tied 1-1 at halftime. Howard scored her first goal six minutes after intermission and Weir and Howard each added insurance scores midway though the second stanza.

Lynchburg held a 19-16 advantage in shots and a 15-10 edge in penalty corners. Elizabeth Foskey (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) and Becca Graham (Meadowbrook, PA/New Church) each made two saves for LC. Heather Kick made five stops for Catawba (3-14).

Lynchburg will host the Vixens of Sweet Briar College Saturday at 2 p.m. on Shellenberger Field in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. The top-seeded Hornets will also honor the program’s eight seniors prior to the contest.
