Lynchburg Men’s Soccer Defeats Ferrum 1-0
Hornets Win Shellenberger Classic – Pat Brown Named MVP

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men’s soccer team scored in the game’s final minutes Sunday to defeat Ferrum College 1-0 and capture the 2006 Shellenberger Classic team title. Guilford College defeated Mountain State University (WV) earlier in the day to go 2-0 in the classic, but Lynchburg won the scoring differential tiebreaker to claim the team title. Hornet freshman defender Pat Brown (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) was named the tournament’s MVP.

Lynchburg out shot Ferrum 11-1 in the first half but couldn’t find the back of the net. Midfielder Joe Jewell (Fairfax Station, VA/W.T. Woodson) tapped in a cross from Maurwyn Bowen (Gaithersburg, MD/Seneca Valley) with only 5:33 left in the contest to lift the Hornets to victory.

The Hornets (4-0) out shot the Panthers 21-5 and held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks. Chris McDonnell made eight stops for Ferrum (0-5).

Scott Meguid scored twice in the Classic’s opening game Sunday, once with 1:06 left in the game, to give Guilford (3-0-1) a 2-1 win over Mountain State. Keith Allison scored the goal for MSU (0-5).

The Hornets travel to York College (PA) Wednesday for a non-conference game at 3 p.m.
