For immediate release – 9/9/2006 - #017 LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College and Guilford College men’s soccer teams both posted wins Saturday on the first day of play at the Shellenberger Classic, held at City Stadium. Casey Zambor (Jackson, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) had two goals and an assist as Lynchburg defeated Mountain State University (WV) 8-1 in the classic’s second game. The Hornets led 3-0 at the break and scored three goals in a five-minute span of the second half to put the game away. Josh Reed (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) had a goal and an assist, while Maurwyn Bowen (Gaithersburg, MD/Seneca Valley), Greg Smith (Bedford, VA/Liberty), Ishmael Sunday (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall Coplay), Matt Hardy (South Riding, VA/Paul VI) and Stephen Brooks (Vienna, VA/Paul VI Catholic) each scored once. Jared Melot (Reading, PA/Antietam) had two assists and Jordan Chapman (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) had one assist.. The Hornets (3-0) out shot the Cougars (0-4) 33-7 and held a 12-4 edge in corner kicks. Guilford College (2-0-1) defeated Ferrum College 5-1 in the opener. Joe Rigert had two goals and two assists, Scott Meguid scored twice and Bryce Hunsucker also scored for the Quakers. Chris Holland got Ferrum (0-4) on the score board late in the second half. Mountain State will face Guilford Sunday at 5 p.m. while Ferrum and Lynchburg will clash at 7:30 p.m. ### |
