LC Men’s Soccer Defeats Averett 2-0 – Win HSC Tourney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – The Lynchburg College men’s soccer team remained unbeaten in 2006, defeating Averett University Saturday 2-0 in the second round of play at the Arby/Hampden-Sydney College Classic. The Hornets captured the classic title, and junior Maurwyn Bowen (Gaithersburg, MD/Seneca Valley) was named the tournament’s MVP.

Senior Ishmael Sunday (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall Coplay) scored an unassisted goal in the first half and Keith Brown (Milford, DE/Milford) added a late insurance goal from Bowen to seal the victory.

The Hornets controlled most of the contest, holding large edges in shots (28-2) and corner kicks (14-1). Averett falls to 0-2 with the loss.

Lynchburg (2-0) hosts the Shellenberger Classic next Saturday and Sunday at City Stadium. The action begins Saturday at 5 p.m. as Ferrum takes on Guilford College and the Hornets square off with Mountain State University at 7:30 p.m.

Lynchburg College placed five members of their squad on the all-tournament team. The All tournament team is as follows:
Lynchburg: Pat Brown, Jimmy Tharpe, Brandon Flowers, and Brian Cocchiola
Hampden-Sydney:  Ben Marchetti, Michael Carter, and Greg
Alvernia: Zach Naylon and Cody Gambler
Averett: Ben Phelps
