LC Men’s Soccer Wins 6-1 Over Alvernia

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Senior Brandon Flowers (Waynesboro, VA/Stuarts Draft) and junior Maurwyn Bowen (Gaithersburg, MD/Seneca Valley) each scored twice to lead the Lynchburg College men’s soccer team to a 6-1 win Saturday over Alvernia College (PA) in the opening round of play at the 2006 Arby/Hampden-Sydney College Classic.

LC took an early lead as Alvernia scored an own goal in the first 10 minutes and it was still a one-goal game entering intermission. But the Hornets exploded for five second-half tallies to comfortably put the contest away.

Junior midfielder Modou Jobarteh (Silver Spring, MD/John F. Kennedy) scored LC’s other goal and freshman midfielder Stephen Brooks (Vienna, VA/Paul Vi Catholic) had two assists. Flowers, Ben Weiss (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and Brian Cocchiola (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) each had one helper.

The team statistics of the game were very even, as LC out shot Alvernia 11-10 and each team was awarded three corner kicks. Junior Marcus Jordan (Lynchburg, VA/Germantown) made three saves in nearly 80 minutes of play in net for LC.

The Hornets will play Averett University Sunday at noon. The Cougars lost 5-0 to Hampden-Sydney earlier in the day.
