Concert Choir (MUSC 022): 1 credit hour
(meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m.)
The Concert Choir comprises student singers who are music and non-music majors at Lynchburg College. Membership is by audition and open only to students who meet the demands of voice, sight singing, overall musicianship, commitment, and are enrolled in applied voice instruction or voice class.
The audition will consist of the following exercises:
- A few five-note ascending/descending scales (both in slow and fast tempi), with support from the piano.
- Sing “America, the Beautiful” or other familiar folk tune.
- The director will ask you to listen while four or five notes are played on the piano, which you will be asked to sing back. This is to check your pitch and rhythm memory.
- Finally, sing one short sight singing exercise.
Choral Union (MUSC 025): 1 credit hour
(meets on Tuesdays 7:00-9:30 p.m.)
This is a College/community selective choral ensemble providing a high quality choral experience of choral/orchestral literature to the general student body, faculty, staff, and interested community singers. The Choral Union performs Handel’s Messiah annually in the fall semester and another choral/orchestral work in the spring. Recent musical selections include Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Requiem, and Te Deum; Haydn’s Mass in Time of War and Theresenmesse; Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Hear My Prayer, and Te Deum; Beethoven’s Mass in C; Orff’s Carmina Burana; Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus; and Durufle’s Requiem.
Membership description:
- Have some level of formal vocal training and/or have good singing techniques.
- Must have good music reading skills or willing/ability to take full responsibility in learning music (so, we spend little time in learning notes and spend more time in making music during our rehearsals).
- Willing to be a fully committed member making this choir one of a few top priorities: members are expected to attend and be prompt for all rehearsals, performances, and other events (i.e. fundraising events, concert tours, and special performances). Partial and selective participation based on an individual’s musical preferences will be strongly discouraged!
The audition will consist of the following exercises to check singer’s vocal ability:
- A few five-note ascending/descending scales (both in slow and fast tempi), with support from the piano.
- Sing your voice part from passages in Handel’s Messiah (bar 1 to the down beat of bar 20 of the No 7, And He Shall Purify); or a short melismatic passage from other vocal works can be used.
- Finally, the director will ask you to listen while four or five notes are played on the piano, which you will be asked to sing back. This is to check your pitch and rhythm memory.
