For immediate release – 8/24/2006 - #003 Delays on Shellenberger Field Project to Bring Schedule Changes LYNCHBURG, VA – Construction delays on Lynchburg College’s Shellenberger Field have led to a number of fall schedule changes for field hockey and men’s and women’s soccer. Several things contributed to the delays, including: * The start of construction was delayed by one week for lacrosse playoffs. * The constructability of the lower retaining wall was much more complicated than initially thought. We ran into rock in front of McWane thus were delayed a few days for removal. * We buried additional conduit to accommodate future campus expansion. * Electrical work was modified to accommodate future campus expansion. * Final grading is taking a little longer due to the hard clay surface. As a result of this we are doing the following things: * Several sub-contractors are working six days a week 10 hours per day. * We have developed a plan to grade and remove dirt from the field so that the Field Turf installers can begin work. Field installation is a 6-8 week process. * We have designated alternative practice and game fields for Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, and Women’s Soccer. * Field Hockey will be played on Fox Field and Women’s and Men’s soccer will play on the upper practice field on Faculty Drive. * The earliest we can hope to play on Shellenberger is on Homecoming, Oct 6-8. * We anticipate that the field may be ready by Oct 6 but that the stands may not. * Once Shellenberger is ready we will shift all games to that venue.
* Field Turf will be installing the newest version of their field turf products. This upgrade is worth well over $50,000 (at no charge to LC) and is the cutting edge for artificial fields! * Moon Field is on time. Fencing, irrigation system, field events, etc… will be ready for fall softball season. For current information and schedule updates, please visit http://www.lynchburg.edu/athletics.xml. ### |
