Former Hornet Shawn Abell Joins Vassar Baseball Staff

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (July 21, 2006) – Vassar's baseball and men's soccer teams announced the addition of new assistant coaches for the 2006-07 season. Shawn Abell, a 2005 graduate of Lynchburg College joins the baseball program while Jeffrey Oliver, a 1996 graduate of the State University of New York at Fredonia, joins the men's soccer program.
Abell an All-ODAC selection in both 2004 and 2005 at Lynchburg, begins his first season as an assistant coach at Vassar College. Last season, Abell served as an assistant at his alma mater.
In his three seasons at Lynchburg, Abell hit .376 with 13 homers and 126 RBI. He holds the single-season and career records for sacrifice flies, while also placing third for at-bats and RBI in a season. Abell was named First-Team All-ODAC in 2004 and 2005, along with third-team All-America in 2004. In addition, he was selected to the first-team All-South Region and All-state squads in 2004 and 2005.
This past summer, Abell signed a professional contract to play for the Brockton Rox, an independent team in the Can-Am League. He will also serve as the college’s summer facilities manager.
