James Goss enters his third season as the head coach of the Hornet women's indoor and outdoor track and field teams.

Since returning to his alma mater Goss has steadily moved the women's team up in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), regional and national rankings.  In his three years at the helm he has produced three indoor and two outdoor conference champions.  In the spring of 2008 he guided Jennie Pernisi to a new conference record in the steeplechase and the conference's rookie of the year honor. In 2007, Mary Mohay earned the ODAC Women's Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. His ladies have garnered 33 indoor and 12 outdoor All-ODAC accolades heading into the 2009 outdoor championships. Since 2006 the women's team has set seven school records and had 45 athletes join the ranks in the schools top five All-Time lists.

Before returning to LC, Goss spent five years as an assistant track and field coach for Emory University (GA), specializing in the sprints and jumps. He founded the Emory Speed & Strength Camp in 2005 and also worked as the director of the event. He graduated with his master's degree in sports administration from Georgia State University in May 2006.

Goss, a 2001 LC graduate, excelled in his four-year career as a Hornet. He was named the 2001 NCAA National Athlete of the Year for outdoor track in 2001 and earned All-American honors 10 times. Goss was the national champion in the long jump, was a five-time South/Southeast Regional Athlete of the Year and a six-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Athlete of the Year.  Goss lives in Lynchburg with his wife, Mackenzie, and newborn daughter, Brenna Elizabeth.

The Lynchburg women's team has won seven indoor conference titles and eight outdoor crowns in the last 11 years. Nine Hornets have reached All-American status since 1996.
