For immediate release – 5/13/2006 - #352 Washington College Defeats Lynchburg 8-7 in NCAA Men’s Lax Tourney LYNCHBURG, VA – Senior midfielder Ryan Morrison scored the game-winning goal midway through the fourth quarter and the defense made the lead stand up as Washington College (MD) defeated Lynchburg College 8-7 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament. The Shoremen advance into the tournament’s Elite Eight – traveling to Salisbury University Wednesday for a quarterfinal contest. The teams traded goals through the first period, with Brian Kemper (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) scoring twice for LC and Washington scoring with a two-man advantage. Johnny Black (Timonium, MD/St. Paul’s) and Kemper scored early in the second period to give the Hornets a 5-3 edge, but Ryan Morrison and Jimmy Kielek answered back to knot the game at five heading into intermission. A Lynchburg pass back to the goalie at the 11:19 mark of the third period rolled into the Hornet net to give Washington a 6-5 edge, but Ryan Cranston (West Chester, PA/Henderson) scored an unassisted goal three minutes later. Chris Read scored an extra-man goal and Black found the back of the net for Lynchburg as the third period wound down. Morrison scored with 7:56 left, and both teams traded possessions over the next few minutes. Lynchburg had a couple scoring opportunities down the stretch, but Washington goalie Kevin Thibadeau made two stops to turn LC away. The Hornets turned the ball with 21 ticks remaining and Washington ran out the clock. Kemper finished with three goals for Lynchburg, which ends its season at 13-4. Cranston had two goals and an assist, Black scored twice and A.J. Tinklepaugh (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) had two assists. Kielek posted two goals and an assist for Washington (14-4) and Morrison also scored twice. Read, Andrew Ostrusky, Mike Sutter and Jon Kenney each scored once, and Thibadeau made 12 saves. The Hornets had a 29-23 edge in shots and LC won 11 of the 19 face-offs. Lynchburg was 0-2 on extra-man opportunities, while the Shoremen scored on all three extra-man situations (twice with a two-man advantage). ###
